Defining Patriotism

So, technically I'm a librarian. Librarians like these things that are called (solely by us, I might add) Information Packages. These include books, CD's, videos, magazines, microfilms, eSerials, eBooks, etc. A large majority of these Information Packages are made up by words, either in text or audio.

I'm a librarian. Librarians like words.
I like words.

If you don't understand words, then the information package loses much of its meaning.

Yes, I'm still on this Dixie Chicks rant, so please bear with me.

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of patriotism is: Love of and devotion to one's country. It seems pretty clear-cut and easy to understand. What's the confusion? How the hell can people interpret this to mean that if you do not support the government and/or their choices, then you are not patriotic, that you are a trader to your country, that you are, in the words of one asshole, "Saddam's Angels"? Maybe it's the word: country.

Well, again off to the word sleuth. The definition of country is: A nation or state. Okay, pretty easy. How about the word: nation?

Nation:

  1. A relatively large group of people organized under a single, usually independent government; a country.
  2. The territory occupied by such a group of people

To be fair, one would have to decide which definition of nation they would apply to the definition of country. In my not so humble opinion, option "b" would be the logical choice. If we assume this is true, then patriotism is: Love of and devotion to one's territory occupied by a relatively large group of people organized under a single, usually independent government. Even if "a" is the correct definition, it still does not matter! It would still allude to ones love of the large group of people organized under a single government. Nowhere does it say country= government. NO WHERE is it stated that if one disagrees with that man, that they are unpatriotic.

Am I patriotic? Unfortunately, I have to answer "no". I'm not, and I know it. Maybe that's a bad thing, I don't know. But there are people who so fiercely love this country, that being anti-Bush is the only way to be.

Loyalty to the country always, loyalty to the government when they deserve it. - Mark Twain

Okay. I'm done.

I tried to be a good little librarian and find the actual scholarly paper, but alas, it was not meant to be found.
